5 Reasons NOT to Get Pierced at the Mall: Why Professional Piercers are the BEST Choice

5 Reasons NOT to Get Pierced at the Mall: Why Professional Piercers are the BEST Choice

Getting a piercing is a super exciting experience, but where you decide to go for it can make all the difference in how the process turns out. While visiting a local mall kiosk or chain store may seem like a super convenient and affordable option, there are countless reasons to consider alternative options. In this article, we'll explain why choosing a professional piercer at a trusted studio is the safer, healthier, and more enjoyable option for you and your new piercing.

1. Lack of Proper Training

At a reputable piercing studio, piercers are highly trained and qualified professionals who have undergone extensive education and training. They are well aware of the details regarding anatomy, placement, sterilization, and aftercare. "Piercers" employed by a store at the mall, on the other hand, may only receive minimal training (if at all....) and are often limited to a piercing gun. Their knowledge of individual piercings, potential complication, bloodborne pathogens, etc. is typically far below that of a professional piercer.

Why it matters:

Piercing are a form of body modification. They require precision! Incorrect placement, cheap jewelry, or hazardous environments can lead to complications. A professional piercer will evaluate your anatomy and promote a safe environment, while mall employees often follow a "one-size-fits-all" approach.

2. Piercing Guns vs. Needles

Many mall piercings are done with piercing guns, a device that uses blunt force to push jewelry through the skin. This can cause trauma to the issues, leading to increased swelling, bruising, and slower healing times. Professional piercers use hollow, single-use needles, which precisely pierce the skin. This method is far less traumatic and promotes faster healing.

Why it matters:

The precision of a piercing needle reduces pain and tissue damage, which also helps the piercing heal faster and with fewer complications.

3. Sterilization Concerns

One of the most important aspects of piercing is the environment in which it is done. In a professional piercing studio, everything is sterilized -- from the equipment to the jewelry. Piercing studios use autoclaves, a medical-grade sterilizer that ensures every tool and piece of jewelry is free from bacteria and contaminants.

Mall stores and kiosks often don't have access to this level of sterilization. The jewelry may come prepackaged, but tools can be reused and there is not guarantee that they've been properly cleaned between uses.

Why it matters:

Improper sterilization can lead to infections, allergic reactions, or even transmission of diseases. When getting pierced at a studio, you can trust that the process is clean and safe, minimizing these risks significantly.

4. Jewelry Quality

High quality jewelry is key to a successful piercing. Professional piercing studios use materials like implant-grade titanium and solid gold, which are hypoallergenic and safe for healing. These materials are also carefully polished and sterilized to prevent infection or irritation to the skin.

Mall kiosks often use low-grade metals like nickel or poorly plated jewelry. They may not offer options that are suitable for sensitive skin or long-term wear.

Additionally, jewelry is typically approached with a "one size fits all" mindset in a non-professional environment. Different bodies require different sized jewelry in order to successfully heal! A professional piercer can take this into account and properly fit you with high quality jewelry.

Why it matters:

Low grade or improperly fit jewelry can cause discomfort, irritation, and even infection in new (or old) piercings. Quality jewelry is an investment in your health and comfort. Professional piercers will ensure that you are provided with the best range of high quality jewelry when you get pierced.

5. Lack of Aftercare Guidance

Piercing aftercare starts as soon as you are pierced. Proper aftercare is essential for a smooth healing process. Professional piercers will provide you with detailed instructions on how to care for your new piercing. They are also available for follow-up questions or concerns.

Outside of a professional piercing environment, aftercare advice is generic or just inaccurate. There is often little consideration for individual needs. The staff may lack the expertise or experience to address specific healing issues or complications.

Why it matters:

Incorrect aftercare can lead to infections, scarring, or rejection of the piercing. Having a trusted professional guide you through the healing process ensures that you'll have the support you need to best heal your new piercing.

Choose a Professional Piercing Studio:

While the convenience and low prices of a new piercing at the mall may seem appealing, they come with significant risks! From poor training and improper tools to inadequate sterilization and low-quality jewelry, getting pierced at a mall can lead to serious complications. When it comes to your body, it is so worth investing in a professional piercer who can provide a safe, clean, and expert experience.

A new piercing should be something that you can enjoy for years to come. Skip the mall, and seek out a trusted professional piercing studio so that your new piercing can be done with care, precision, and your wellbeing in mind,
