It's crucial to keep healing piercings clean to ensure their health. Even after a piercing heals, however, regular cleaning is important! Like any area of the body, natural oils, sweat, dead skin cells, and other debris can accumulate around the piercing site. Regular cleaning helps remove these substances to maintain the health of the piercing! But what is the best way to clean a healed piercing? Let's talk about it!
Benefits of Cleaning Your Healed Piercing:
1. Prevents Buildup & Limits Odor!
2. Maintains Jewelry Condition!
3. Prevents Irritation!
4. Promotes the Health of Your Piercing!
General Tips:
Less is More!
Cleaning your piercings can be integrated into your regular hygiene routine! A mild soap and water is often the most you will need to clean most piercings!
Stay away from alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, and other harsh chemicals that can do more harm than good!
You CAN Keep Jewelry In!
Piercings can be thoroughly cleaned even without taking the jewelry out (ESPECIALLY when they are healing).
Every Body is Different
These are general guidelines. Meaning, that your body may require alternative methods to keep your piercings happy and healthy! If you have questions regarding your skin type or other factors, a trusted piercer can direct you towards the right routine for your body and piercings!
Ear Piercings:
Ear piercings can be cleaned while in the shower with a gentle cleanser or soap. Gently wash around the piercings and rinse thoroughly in water to remove any access soap. Once out of the shower, ears can be dried gently with a towel (careful of snagging jewelry!), with a cotton swab, or even air dried with a blow dryer. Drying ear piercings completely is super important to avoid irritation!
Facial Piercings:
Taking care and cleaning healed facial piercings can be as easy as washing your face as your normally would. A gentle facial cleanser can be used to clean septum, nostril, eyebrow and other piercings on the face. When rinsing, make sure all cleanser is washed from the pierced area to avoid irritation.
Navel & Nipple Piercings:
Like the abovementioned piercings, water and soap is enough to upkeep the hygiene of navel and nipple piercings! Avoid washing with a loofah to prevent snagging (trust us, it HURTS)! Dry thoroughly and gently to avoid irritation.
Oral Piercings:
Good oral hygiene is the best way to care and clean oral piercings. Brushing, flossing, and mouthwash all contribute to the health of oral piercings. Special attention can also be given to the piercing jewelry itself to remove plaque buildup that may collect there. This can be done with a soft bristled toothbrush, or with a waterpik.
