Our Guide to Eyebrow Piercings

Our Guide to Eyebrow Piercings

So, you want to get your eyebrow pierced? We’ve put together a guide to peruse before you book an appointment!

 Here's What We Will Cover:

1. Variations and Placement

2. Considerations Before Getting Pierced

3. What to Expect During and After Piercing

4. Jewelry Options

Variations and Placement:

We love eyebrow piercings. Especially because there are so many variations. There is the choice for a vertical or horizontal piercing, as well as a range of space along the brow bone where your piercing can be placed. You can choose to stick to a traditional ring off to the side, or a pair of bars placed towards the center on your eyebrow. The angle of the piercing can also be altered! The range of creative decisions make this piercing especially personal and individualized.

Before making your appointment, take the time to explore your options for placement. Additionally, we recommend checking out the Instagram of the piercer you are planning to visit. There, you'll be able to consider their prior work and get some inspo for your own piercing!

Considerations Before Getting Pierced:

There are a few things to consider before committing to this piercing. Eyebrow piercings are considered a surface piercing, similar to bridge piercings. What makes a surface piercing different from a traditional piercing is that, unlike a lobe or septum, there is not a distinct front and back of the tissue that the piercing is going through. A surface piercing rather, is placed through a flat or ridged surface of skin. Because eyebrow piercings are a surface piercing, they are more prone to rejection. While this may be intimidating, many people are able to enjoy healthy pierced eyebrows!

Anatomy is also a factory. This is a consideration for many piercings, although eyebrows are particularly vulnerable to rejection or migration if there is not enough tissue available for the jewelry. A professional piercer should ensure that the brow bone and tissue are stable enough to support a piercing. Having supportive anatomy will decrease the chances of rejection.

What to Expect During and After Piercing:

“Having gotten my eyebrow pierced twice, I found both experiences to be a momentary discomfort. Duh, it hurt! But it was less painful than my lip or even helix piercing honesty.”

 - Ruby, Pierced Owl Social Media Manager

We are not here to tell you that getting your eyebrow pierced won’t hurt. All piercings are painful. However, many individuals who have gone through the process relay that it is on the low end on the pain scale.

Afterwards, it is not uncommon to experience redness, swelling, or even bruising. Aftercare for this piercing is the standard regiment of regular saline sprays. For a more in depth aftercare tutorial, refer to our Piercing Aftercare Guide

The healing timeline will differ from eyebrow to eyebrow, but generally you can expect your new piercing to heal in 3 to 6 months. Once your piercing has healed, you will be able to change your jewelry!

It's best to avoid touching your piercing while it's healing. That means no waxing, being cautious of your new jewelry when taking on and off t-shirts, as well as avoiding it while brushing your hair!

Jewelry Options:

Your piercing will initially be fit with a curved barbell that is long enough to account for swelling. Your piercer will provide you with a timeline for when your piercing should be downsized. We recommend visiting a professional to have this done!

Once your piercing has healed, your jewelry can be changed. You can stick to a curved barbell, or opt for a captive bead or hinged segment ring (we do not recommend wearing rings for long periods of time.) The standard gauge for this piercing is 16 gauge. Jewelry for eyebrow bars tend to measure 8mm long, however, this is anatomy dependent and you may need a bar that is longer or shorter!
