For most pierced people, the act of changing body jewelry can be one of the most dreaded tasks. Getting new jewelry is so exciting! But if you haven’t mastered the technique, it is a mentally torturous project to change into your new piece. Beads and balls can easily be lost down the drain or on the floor, threading jewelry ends is challenging, and jewelry insertion itself is intimidating.
Fortunately for you, we have some hacks that can boost your confidence when it comes to changing your jewelry. Some of which are free and involve items that you probably have around your home!
What We'll Go Over:
- What To Know Before Changing Jewelry
- Tools That Can Assist In Changing Body Jewelry
- Additional Tips to Aid in Changing Piercings
Before You Begin:
Always make sure that your piercing is completely healed before changing it! Changing your piercing during the healing period can cause damage and prolong the process.
Before changing your piercing, triple check that the jewelry you are changing into is the correct fit! That means that the gauge size, diameter, and length matches your previous piece.
When working with threaded jewelry, remember: righty tighty, lefty loosey!
Our All-Time Favorite Hacks:
Struggle with threading the ends onto your septum jewelry? Using a bead holder tool, you can pick up balls with ease and twist them onto the barbell or post without fear of losing grip.

Using String to Open a Hinged Segment Ring:
Opening a hinged segment ring while it’s on your nose or ear is super intimidating! Depending on how small the ring is, it can feel impossible. Using a piece of string (or a hair band, floss, etc.) thread it through the ring and pull gently to open.

Poster Putty on a Cotton Swab:
Apply some poster putty to a cotton swab, pencil, or hair pin and push your piercing ball into the putty. Next, twist your jewelry into place. Secure the threading with your fingers and voila! Your jewelry is on!

Similar to the poster putty method, this hack requires a cotton swab. Apply lash glue to the swab and allow for it to get tacky. Next, place your jewelry ball onto the glue. Your bead should stay on while you thread it onto the barbell or post.
Lubricating your piercing makes for an effortless insertion! Our Holey Butt'r lobe cream can be used on ear or septum piercings to prepare the piercing prior to putting jewelry in! Though it makes jewelry slippery and harder to hold, disposable gloves can help avoid butter fingers!

Towel Over the Sink:
If only we had a dollar for every piece of jewelry we lost down the drain. Place a towel over your bathroom sink next time to catch any jewelry you drop!
Rings are a pain to open with your fingers. Especially as the gauge size gets larger. This tool is like a reverse plier and made to assist in opening rings. It also include notches that fit different size rings. This will make taking off your captive bead rings a game changer!

The hack you decide to use will likely be determined by how pressing your situation is. Is it 3 AM and you're struggling to get your septum ring securely on? Or are you methodically preparing your plan for changing your jewelry before your new jewelry even arrives. Whatever your case may be, we're sure these will help!
