What to Expect When Getting Your Nipples Pierced

What to Expect When Getting Your Nipples Pierced

Nipple piercings are a super popular piercing and have been for years. For many, nipple piercings not only serve an aesthetic appeal, but also encourage self acceptance and body positivity. Nipple piercings are, however, a piercing that should be accompanied with serious consideration. Not only is this a super sensitive area, but it is also a more advanced piercing to heal. Therefore, we can't stress enough the importance of being well-informed before making the commitment.

In this guide, we'll walk you through everything to know and expect before getting your nipples pierced -- preparation, pain levels, and the piercing procedure itself. That way, you can go into your appointment feeling confident and prepared.

Choosing the Right Piercer

One of the most critical factors in a successful nipple piercing experience is selecting a professional, reputable piercer. Whenever getting pierced, it's worth it to spend the time and money to find and get pierced by a qualified piercer. That cannot be more true for nipple piercings.

Look for an Association of Professional Piercers (APP) member and someone who adheres to strict hygiene and sterilization protocols. A good piercer will use sterile, high-quality tools, wear gloves, and have a clean, organized studio. Never hesitate to ask about their experience, certifications, and sterilization practices.

Getting your nipple pierced can be really vulnerable. Therefore, going to someone trusted and who you feel comfortable around is just as important as someone who is qualified and experienced.

Understanding the Pain

Let's address the big question: How much does it hurt? Nipple piercings are considered one of the more painful body piercings due to the dense nerve endings in the area. That said, pain tolerance varies from person to person. Most clients describe it as a sharp pinch followed by a burning sensation that lasts a few seconds. The procedure itself is quick, and an experienced piercer will minimize discomfort by working efficiently and precisely.

Deep breathing exercise can help calm the nervous system before and during the piercing process. Holding your breath, or taking short and shallow breaths can increase pain and anxiety. Keep this in mind during your piercing appointment.

The Piercing Process

Understanding what happens during the piercing process can help alleviate anxiety and set realistic expectations. Here's a step-by-step breakdown of what to expect:

Consultation & Preparation: Your piercing will discuss placement options, jewelry, and answer any last minute questions you may have.

Marking and Positioning: Your nipple will be marked (with a body marker) and you'll have the opportunity to confirm the placement. Next, your piercer will position you in place (sitting or laying down).

The Piercing: Some piercers may use a clamp to hold the nipple in place, while others prefer a freehand technique. Using a sterilized, hollow needle, the piercer will push through the nipple in one swift motion. This is the most intense portion of the process (also the quickest!)

Jewelry Insertion: Immediately following the piercing, your jewelry will be inserted. This may feel a little tender, but again is a quick process.

After the piercing, your nipples may feel sore, warm, and slightly swollen. This is all normal! Some minor bleeding may occur initially, but should stop within a few hours. Many people with pierced nipples may experience heightened nipple sensitivity in the days following procedure, which gradually subsides with time.

Final Thoughts

Getting your nipples pierced can be an empowering, exciting, and intense experience. The most important thing you can do is to be fully prepared and educated before getting pierced. By choosing a skilled piercer and knowing what to expect during the procedure, you can set yourself up for a smooth and positive experience. If you have any questions or concerns, always consult a professional piercer.
